  • Iowa County Democratic Party June meeting rescheduled to June 20th 1:30 Meeting

The Iowa County Democratic party will not be meeting this coming weekend on our usual second Saturday of the month. The state Dem convention falls on that day, and I and at least some of our members will be attending it.

The rescheduled meeting will take place on Saturday, June 20th at 1:30. As usual, we will meet in Mineral Point at 43 High St.

  • Pocan Town Hall Wednesday May 27 & Other Upcoming Events

    Hello, Everyone!

I write with some reminders of upcoming events.

First up, Wednesday May 27, Mark Pocan will be holding a town hall forum at the Mineral Point City Hall. The event begins at 3:00 p.m., and the address is 137 High St, Mineral Point, WI 53565.

Immediately after the Pocan town hall, the Iowa County party will be holding a discussion of plans for canvassing for the rest of 2026. AS I’ve noted before, we have some pretty substantial changes in mind for the coming months, and if you are at all interested in being part of this conversation, you are strongly encouraged to attend. We could also use help from people who do not want to do door-knocking, so if that is of any interest, please come!

And speaking of canvassing, Ben Gruber’s campaign will be canvassing in Lafayette County on Saturday, May 30th. THere are two times that you can sign up for, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Pick whichever time works best for you and then sign up for the canvas on Mobilize: Drivers are also welcome!

On June 6th, Todd Larson will be hosting a campaign event for Governor candidate Sara Rodriguez at his farm near Blanchardville. The event runs from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Further details and registration info can be found here:

  • County Party Meeting May 9th 1:30 pm followed by Guest State Senator Kelda Roys – Running for Governor

I write to remind you of our next monthly meeting on Saturday, May 9th at our office in Mineral Point, 43 High St. As has been our custom of late, we will start at 1:30.

This meeting will feature a visit by State Senator Kelda Roys, who is running for Governor. These visits by the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination give us a chance to hear from them at greater length than the 5-minute “elevator pitches” that a number of us heard at the 2nd CD Convention last weekend, and to put questions to her about what she hopes to accomplish.

Let me add that we will be holding a discussion of strategic plans for the rest of 2026, the outline of which are described on the enclosed agenda. However, let me say here that we need your help. There is really no other way to put it. In the coming election, we are being presented with an opportunity to take control of all three parts of state government for the first time since 2010. In my reckoning, that opportunity is a real one, not just a faint hope, and it is something we must seize for all sorts of reasons. So please come to the meeting next Saturday to join in our planning and join this discussion.

One initiative in particular deserves special mention here, and that is a new approach to canvassing. For some time now, a number of us have been thinking about a more neighborhood-based approach to canvassing that uses it not just to fill in holes in our voter database but also to build engagement with voters by creating neighborhood groups. I won’t discuss all the details here, but if you are at all interested in helping, please come to the monthly meeting and then stay around if you can until 4:00 when we will talk over the plans for canvassing.

Hope to see you next Saturday!

    Thanks

    Tom

  • May Day Gathering 4:30 Dodgeville Court House Today, May 1.

May Day (that’s today!) gathering in Dodgeville at the court house at 4:30. Bring a folding chair and listen to Ben Gruber, Red Door, and the Driftless Singers.

  • County Party Meeting Saturday April 11th at 1:30pm

This is a reminder of the county party meeting that will take place on Saturday, April 11th at 1:30 p.m. As usual, the meeting will take place at 43 High St. in Mineral Point. We will be electing delegates for the upcoming 2nd CD convention, voting on any resolutions proposed for the convention, and beginning our planning for summer events.

Two other reminders for the meeting.

    1) We continue to collect food for donation to SWPAC, so please remember to bring an item or two.

    2) If you want to bring in wires from Chris Taylor campaign signs to the meeting, we will collect and recycle them for the upcoming fall election. Saves money for the campaigns and reduces waste!

  • Upcoming Events

    Hi Everyone —

Here are some upcoming events this weekend,

First off, I am sure that all of you already know about the No Kings rally in Dodgeville from 10:00 a,m, to noon on Saturday March 28th. As was the case last time in October, the rally will begin behind the county courthouse and then will continue as a parade down Iowa St. This one counts for displaying our resistance to Trump’s ever-escalating authoritarian behavior, so let’s have a big showing!

Next, on Sunday we will be canvassing in preparation for the April election. If you want to give canvassing a try, this is an excellent time to do so! We will be talking to Democratic voters, urging them to go out and support Chris Taylor for Supreme Court. These are generally pretty easy conversations. If you want to sign up on Mobilize, we will give you some training and send you out with a veteran canvasser.

Finally, on Sunday evening Ben Gruber will be holding a meet and greet in Highland from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The address is 709 Dodgeville St

Looking forward to seeing you this weekend.

  • April 7th Election and Mail-in ballots

    Hi, Everybody —

This is just a quick reminder to everyone that if you plan on mailing your ballot for the election on April 7th, you should get your ballot in the mail as soon as possible. The US Postal Service continues to face severe cuts, and the result is that mail takes longer to be delivered. By state law, mail-in ballots must be received in the clerk’s office no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, which is when the polls close. This suggests that you should take the ballot to your town/village/city clerk’s office yourself, if that is feasible. In any case, don’t let your vote be missed for failing to get it in on time.

And here’s a reminder for residents of the City of Dodgeville. Early voting is now handled at the new City Hall at 410 E. Leffler St., but if you vote on Election Day that will take place at the Iowa County Law Enforcement building at 109 E. Leffler St.

Town of Dodgeville residents will vote in the usual place, at the Town Hall, 108 E. Leffler St.

It all makes me wish that I had a parking concession on Leffler!
